Help with Asset Location Options
My son is 39 years old. He has his portfolio with Fidelity Investments. He has a brokerage account holding total market stock fund and tons of cash to invest; and, a Roth IRA account with Fidelity TSM, TISM and Total Bond Fund. He needs to increase his bond allocation for risk. Asset location of Total Bond in a Roth IRA vs. increasing his bond allocation in his taxable account with a tax-exempt municipal bond fund is the question I was asked by him. His tax federal tax rate is not especially high (guessing 20%).
Should the Roth IRA hold his taxable bonds or should he start loading up his taxable brokerage account with a muni fund index to satisfy his bond allocation? His portfolio is heavy on equity funds and he needs to increase his bond allocation to at least 25%. Where to allocate bonds, what kind of bonds (Total Bond in Roth IRA or Muni bond index in taxable) is the question with which he needs help. He has read the Wiki article on asset location as a starter.
Any other options from our community would be appreciated.
